CRETAN CHRISTMAS FOODS

Φωτογραφία του George Portokalakis.
The celebratory foods made at Christmas in Greece are Kourabiethes, Melomakarona and the Christmas bread
(Christopsomo)
In all Greek religious holidays, there are special foods, cookies and sweets that are made just for those occasions

MELOMAKARONA - GREEK HONEY-WALNUT CHRISTMAS COOKIES WITH OLIVE OIL
MELOMAKARONA: – my favourite – One of the most popular treats throughout Greece during the Christmas Holidays and their intense homely smell makes every house smell like Christmas.
One of the Greek traditional Christmases little cookies made with olive oil and lots of Christmas spices which are then soaked in honey syrup and topped with chopped walnuts - a fantastic traditional recipe for Greek Christmas.
Everyone loves them because they are moist, softened with honey syrup without becoming completely saturated and soggy and topped with chopped nuts.
The best melomakarona are those which are crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside!
When you bite into one of them they create a moist, syrupy sweet sensation in your mouth and the honey also adds to the flavours and texture.
The reason why those spiced melomakarona became the traditional Christmas cookies is that they have lots of honey which from ancient times in Greece, symbolized the creativity and the wellbeing, two things that we want from the new year to bring us!
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas filled with friends, family, love, happiness, and health!
Make your house smell like Christmas! Soaked in honey syrup and garnished in chopped walnuts, these Christmas cookies will amaze you.
Best of luck!
