KEFTEDES: MEAT BALLS

One of the most popular Greek appetizers served as part of a meze platter, or as main meal.
Keftedes are seasoned meatballs, crispy, juicy and absolutely delicious!
Fried meatballs with pork, beef or mix pork and beef or lamb or chicken. A traditional Greek meal you cannot stop eating. Eat them hot, warm or cold no matter just delicious.

As keftedes stay remarkably moist, they’re great to prepare in advance and take with you for a picnic or on your work and eat them during your coffee break.
MEAT FREE – VEGGIE BASED BALLS
Crete being in the midst of Mediterranean and  crossroad of three continents,  were always magnet factors since ancient times, for all great Mediterranean based civilizations that pursued to establish their domination over the Cretan indigenous population respectively.
Result, Cretans for almost 2 millennia were under occupation to the mightiest Roman Empire, Franks, Moroccan Pirates, Venetians and Ottoman Empire

Cretans joins the huge variety of absolutely vegetarian foods that for centuries accompanies with home made bread and ways of cooking and techniques passed spoken, from mother to daughter, from neighbor to neighbor, throughout time.  
Veggie based balls are a result of this activating the women creativity and for more than 1000 years Cretan and Greek farm house ladies and mothers used their inspiration and created large number of combinations of “keftedes”  options, our today’s inheritance! replacing the animal originated food stuff with the products mother earth was offering in abundance to them.
Many dishes of the big variety of Cretan and Greek cuisine’s specialties, like KEFTEDES – MEAT BALLS, have been turned to a variety of absolutely MEAT FREE KEFTEDES using veggies like KOLOKITHOKEFTEDES- zucchini balls, MELITZANOKEFTEDES – Aubergines balls -, NTOMATOKEFTEDES – tomato balls, PATATOKEFTEDES – potato balls, MARATHOKEFTEDES – fennel balls etc.
